Moving gets easier when you separate decisions, packing, logistics, address changes, and first-week setup.
Immediate actions
- Confirm your move date, access time, parking, elevators, and keys.
- Book movers, a truck, or helpers as early as possible.
- Create a folder for lease, closing documents, mover estimates, receipts, and utility confirmations.
- Start a donation, sell, recycle, and trash sorting area.
First week
- Transfer or start electricity, gas, water, internet, trash, and renters or homeowners insurance.
- Pack essentials for the first night separately.
- Label boxes by room and priority.
- Submit mail forwarding and update key addresses.
First month
- Update banks, employer records, insurance, medical providers, subscriptions, and licenses if needed.
- Check smoke detectors, locks, filters, meters, and appliance manuals.
- Photograph move-in condition and report urgent issues.
- Break down boxes and finish one room at a time.
Common mistakes
